  66. the warranties of merchantability and of fitness for any purpose.

  70. Chartist is a "shareware program" and is provided at no charge
  71. to the user for evaluation.  Feel free to share it with your
  72. friends, but please do not give it away altered or as part of
  73. another system.  The essence of "user-supported" software is to
  74. provide personal computer users with quality software without
  75. high prices, and yet to provide incentive for programmers to
  76. continue to develop new products.

  78. If you continue to use Chartist after 30 days, you must make a
  79. registration payment of $69.95 (plus $3.00 shipping and applicable
  80. taxes) to Novagraph. Payment of the registration fee will license
  81. one copy for use on any one computer at any one time.

  83. You must treat this software just like a book.    An example is
  84. that this software may be used by any number of people
  85. and may be freely moved from one computer location to another,
  86. so long as there is no possibility of it being used at one location
  87. while it is being used at another.

  89. Commercial users of Chartist must register and pay for their
  90. copies of Chartist within 30 days of first use or their license
  91. is withdrawn.  Site-License arrangements may be made by con-
  92. tacting Novagraph.

  94. Anyone distributing Chartist for any kind of remuneration must
  95. first contact Novagraph at the address below for authorization.
  96. This authorization will be automatically granted to distributors
  97. recognized by the (ASP) as adhering to its guidelines for
  98. shareware distributors, and such distributors may begin offering
  99. Chartist immediately (However Novagraph must still be advised so
  100. that the distributor can be kept up-to-date with the latest
  101. version of Chartist).

  104. friends for evaluation.  Please encourage them to register their
  105. copy if they find that they can use it.  All registered users

  140. Installation Instructions

  142. To install the software, copy all files from the distribution
  143. into a directory on your hard drive.
  144.  
  145. To set up the Chartist icon in the Program Manager, refer to
  146. "Adding Program Items and Documents to a Group" in Chapter 3
  147. of the Microsoft Windows User's Guide.
  148.  
  149. To set up an association in Windows with Chartist Documents,
  150. refer to "Associating Documents with an Application" in Chapter 4
  151. of the Microsoft Windows User's Guide. Chartist Documents have a
  152. file type of "CHT."

  185. All sample files were created with an HP LaserJet IIIP printer
  186. selected.  All text uses the fonts available with that printer.
  187. If you print these charts using a different printer, the fonts
  188. may not map into optimal selections on that printer,
  189. especially if the smaller fonts are not available.

  193. Tips:
  194.  
  195. Fitting Text Into Symbols
  196. =========================
  197. The size of text in a symbol is displayed most accurately at
  198. 100% scale and with "View Text As Printed" checked. At reduced scales
  199. text may look as if it is too big for the symbol.  Also if you use
  200. one of the type manager products, such as ATM, the View Text As Printed
  201. feature may not expand the displayed text enough to show its full
  202. horizontal extent.  You can select the symbol in question and print it
  203. alone using the "Print Selection" Check box in the Print Chart dialog.
  204. This will give you a quick hard copy look at the symbol and text.
  205.  
  206.   Note:
  207.   ====
  208.   The file CHARTRFN.FON contains raster fonts that are used
  209.   to display very small text (i.e. at reduced scales).    As the display
  210.   scale is reduced, the actual fonts used by the symbol or line may
  211.   be replaced by these fonts (for display purposes only).  The result
  212.   is similar to "greek", in that the text is not particularly readable,
  213.   but it approximates the size it should be at the display scale. If for
  214.   some reason this font file is deleted from the application directory,
  215.   this "greek" effect will not operate.  To restore the font, just copy
  216.   the file back into the application directory from the distribution
  217.   disk.

  219. Making Symbols a Uniform Size
  220. =============================
  221. To make several symbols the same size as any symbol in your chart, select
  222. the symbol with the desired size. (Say that you stretched that symbol
  223. to hold some text, and want all the other symbols to be the same size.)
  224. Choose the Options Default Symbol Size... command (There is a Tool Bar
  225. button for this command. See the manual), click on the Copy From Symbol
  226. button. Then click on OK.  Select the other symbols and choose the
  227. Symbol Reset Size command. (There is also a Tool Bar
  228. button for this command.)

  230. Where the Tool Bar Icons Are Defined
  231. ====================================
  232. Each Tool Bar Icon button selects a command from the menu. To see
  233. what commands are tied to the Tool Bar, press F1 from the main Chartist
  234. Window. This brings up the top level Help Index for Chartist.  There is
  235. a Tool Bar Topic that you can click on, and that will tell you what you
  236. need to know.

  241. Help File Erratum
  242.  
  243. In the Tool Bar, the sample line and line font description
  244. are now side-by-side instead of stacked as shown in the Tool Bar Help
  245. Topic. This minor change was made recently to avoid clipping that text
  246. on very high resolution displays, where the buttons get small-ish.

  252. WordPerfect For Windows 5.1 Issue
  253.  
  254. There is a problem in how WordPerfect For Windows interprets Metafile
  255. Pictures clipped from Chartist and other applications. It is our under-
  256. standing at this writing that WordPerfect is aware of their problem
  257. and plans to correct it in an interim release. If you use WordPerfect for
  258. Windows, you may experience problems with printed text appearance from
  259. Chartist metafile pictures. Chartist 1.02 uses the MM_ANISTROPIC mode
  260. for metafile pictures, which is the most accepted format. Also, Chartist
  261. adheres to all other standard practices for clipboard data exchange.
